Skopje is the capital and largest city in Macedonia. Located in the northeastern part of Macedonia, next to the river Vardar. Even though Skopje is a modern city it has many historical and cultural sites, with monuments, archaeological sites and a fortress. Besides there are beautiful caves in the canyon of the River Treska and Lake Matka and a health spa in the eastern part of the city. In the city center you find the Old Bazaar with narrow streets as well as impressing monuments, buildings and a mega-fountains which is a result of a project called ‘Skopje 2014’ that had the purpose of showcasing Macedonian Culture through the centuries. Another thing that makes Skopje an attractive destination is that it has become a vital regional route for low cost flight operators.
The eastern part of Macedonia south east of Skopje is less explored by tourism but none the less it represent one of the most interesting regions in the area with unspoiled nature. One of the places of interest is the area around Kocani and lake Gradce, with mountains, lakes, waterfalls, a river, and archaeological sites where you fell to be thousands of kilometers away from civilization. Nonetheless you are just few kilometers away from Kocani with everyday city life.
20 km north of Kocani, you find Ponikva which located in the Osogovo Mountains, at 1580 m above sea level, with forest, diverse vegetation and amazing panorama views over the area. For winter sports there are two ski lifts and a snowboard track available.
Eastern Macadonia has the ideal conditions for mountain biking, paragliding, and other extreme sports as well as for those who just want to enjoy the beauty of the unspoiled nature.
