Sofia is still an overlooked destination for city tourism but there has been an increasing interest from tourists for Sofia over the past years.
Sofia is located in the western part of the country at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain. Sofia is today a modern city which is the cultural and economic center of Bulgaria but it also has deep historical roots stretching back thousands of years to the time the city was founded. This long history makes Sofia’s architecture a little bit mixed and gives a special atmosphere with traces of neo renaissance, neoclassical and Soviet style architecture.

The main pedestrian street is Vitosha Blvd with high end brand and fashion shops, cafes and restaurants. Next to the street you find some beautiful buildings such as the Ivan Vazov National Theatre or Public Mineral Baths.
Walking around in the city you will have the opportunity to explore the everyday life of a big city but you will also find many small shops and not at least small restaurants where you can enjoy barbecue dishes and not at least soups that according to many are some of the best.
There are also many parks. The parks in Sofia are a favorite place for relaxation and sports. In the very center of the most famous is the Park National Palace of Culture and the Boris’s Garden Park.
Park National Palace of Culture which is located at the end of the pedestrian street and it is a perfect to relax in the middle of the city. In the park is also some monuments and the National Palace of Culture which is a huge building constructed in Soviet style architecture.
Another park is the Boris’s Garden Park. In this park is characterized by its beautiful flower beds and it has a big lake where you can sail in small boats boating or water wheeling. In winter the lake turns to the biggest open-air skating-rink in the city. The lake is the favorite place for romantic walks for many citizen of Sofia.
In the park you will also find tennis-courts, swimming pools, bicycle racing tracks, the Vasil Levski National Stadium.
Sofia has many historical sites, The oldest temple in Sofia Rotunda “St. George “is located in the middle of the city center next to the now is surrounded by the buildings of Presidential Palace. It dates back to the 4th century AD and is believed to be during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great.
The most famous church and building in Sofia is the St. Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral, it is one of the biggest churches in the Balkans build in Neo-Byzantine style. It was built as a memorial to the 200,000 Russian soldiers who died in the Liberation War from the Ottoman Empire.

Sofia is surrounded by mountains that can be visited on daytrips from Sofia. Those mountains include Vitosha, Lyuli, and Stara Planina where you find a beautiful nature with peace from the hectic city life in the city. In the mountains you also find several that have preserved the spirit of the days when Bulgaria were ruled by the Ottoman Empire. The most notable monasteries are the Dragalevski, Lozen, German, Kremikovski, Cherepish, and Osenovlask.
The Vitosha Mountain is located in a natural park, with a rich fauna and beautiful panorama views. In the winter the Vitosha Mountain is a popular place for winter sport, and in the summer it is a place to relaxation in the mountains or for hiking. In the area are also a several historical sites where the most known are the Boyana Church and Dragalevtsi Monastery.
The Lyulin Mountain is only 3 km away from the city center and is a great place for outings, picnics and walks.
The Plana Mountain also offers many interesting sights for tourists among others the Koken Monastery, built in the 10th century it is 10 km away from the city center and can be reached by bus or car.
Pancharevo Lake is located 15 km away from the city center near to the village of Pancharevo. The lake is about 5 km and 1 km. wide and it is a popular destination for sunbathing, fishing, water sports and swimming.
